Before making the original Halloween into one of the most profitable independent films of all time, John Carpenter directed this riveting low-budget thriller from 1976, in which a nearly abandoned police station is held under siege by a heavily armed gang called Street Thunder. Inside the station, cut off from contact and isolated, cops and convicts who were headed for death row must now join forces or die. That’s the basic plot, but it’s what Carpenter does with it that’s remarkable. Drawing specific inspiration from the classic Howard Hawks Western Rio Bravo (which included a similar siege on disadvantaged heroes), Carpenter used his simple setting for a tense, tightly constructed series of action sequnces, emphasizing low-key character development and escalating tension. Few who’ve seen the film can forget the “ice cream cone” scene in which a young girl is caught up in the action by patronizing a seemingly harmless ice cream truck. It’s here, and in other equally memorable scenes, that Carpenter demonstrates his singular knack for injecting terror into the mundane details of daily life, propelling this potent thriller to cult favorite status and long-standing critical acclaim. –Jeff Shannon

With so many romantic comedies revolving around eternally adolescent men with self-centered philosophies and terminal commitment problems, it’s kind of nice to see one of them take stock of himself. Tim Daly, a chef with unconventional methods (try his dishwasher fish), embarks on a qust through past loves with sincere qustions about why things didn’t work out. Boyish Daly is charming as the rogu romantic, and his tour through broken affairs gives some fine actresses comic-showcase scenes–Jamie Gertz, Laura Leighton, Elizabeth Pena, Mimi Rogers, and Katy Selverstone among them. Olivia d’Abo is his current flame, a would-be psychic restaurateur who sets out after him, and Melora Hardin is an old gal pal who just may be his best chance at a fresh start. This isn’t quite the High Fidelity thing–Daly’s qust is a well-meaning attempt at personal growth, not a sour tour of self-justification–but then this is hardly as ambitious or revealing. He doesn’t learn anything that a little serious self-examination would reveal just as well, but that’s beside the point. It’s a warm and winning little comedy about growing up, letting go, and opening up, with deftly played comedy and generous performances. –Sean Axmaker
