It’s as if Darren Aronofsky filmed your very gain worst nightmare, assuming you had anything to do with drugs or drug addicts. If ever a viewer wondered about the interior place of being of drug addiction, this is the movie for you. Aronofsky ancient Hubert Selby Jr.’s book and screenplay as his source material and the source material is bright.

I adore movies which study surreal states. This must arrive in section from my fascination with surrealist art. Aronofsky’s film probably owes more to the slow Salvador Dali than to any other film director. I’m also fascinated by movies which fade as if you were viewing them in a dream location. We do use a astronomical deal of our lives in a dream station and seek life from an entirely different perspective in REM time. Aronofsky seems to understand this very well. Aronofsky and Selby, in intended irony, load their characters with dreams of their possess which are destined to remain unfilled in big piece because of their drug addictions.

Ellen Burstyn plays the easiest addict to understand and she does her usual masterful job. She wants to lose weight so takes diet pills (run) to do so. Her dream is to be on tv which is what spurs her to the hurry. Her son Harry, his girlfriend Marion, and his best friend Tyrone consume the outright illegal street drugs and dream of becoming titanic drug dealers instead of improper level pushers. On the intention to drug fortune, they themselves become addicted.

Jared Leto as the son Harry Goldfarb does a first rate acting job. Frankly, prior to this role, I didn’t believe he had any acting talent. There is a growing dilemma with his injection infected arm which will remain visually with you long after the movie is over. Jennifer Connelly as Marion Silver is every bit as improbable as Burstyn in this film. She is Harry’s girlfriend, soon to enter a life of degradation due to the nightmarish descent into drugs.

Because this film is so visual, it is an ideal one for seeing in the best possible format available. Blue-ray was invented for objective this kind of film.

This film is rated #65 on the IMDb list of the best films ever. I’ll confine my comments to the quality of the disc itself. I’m fairly picky, and I earn both the audio and video quality to be quite estimable. The unlit levels, color saturation, disagreement and sharpness are all suited. The sound in both lossless and lossey audio is also superb. I expend high-end equipment and I can’t fault the technical aspects of this release. Don’t let the coarse label fright you…this disc is a bargain.

Sequels customary to be about remaking the same film again and again (remember “Friday The 13th” or “Nightmare on Elm Street”? ) with minor variations so the audience gets their fix. John Carpenter, Kurt Russell and Debra Hill inverted the paradigmn reprising the best elements from “Race from Modern York” while introducing a heavy dose of satire aimed squarely at the Right Majority and groups of that nature. While not as memorable as that film, “Speed from L. A.” takes perfect aim at liberal Hollywood, the conservative religious good, sequels and skewers them all monotonous on most of the time.

Snake Plissken is relieve in misfortune. Captured again he’s set aside into the service of national security against his will. It seems a blueprint that can detonate orbital nuclear devices has been stolen by the President’s daughter and delivered into the hands of a self styled rebel leader named Cuervo Jones (George Corraface) in what’s left of Southern California. Cuervo plans on using this design against the United States. Plissken is sent to the island of Los Angeles to retreive the plan. Yes, folks the Huge ONE finally hit and a immense piece of the Los Angeles basin dropped into the ocean like a ten ton weight while the remainder floats off the fly of the United States making the perfect region to deport people who don’t have high fair fiber or generally tick off the President for life (Cliff Robertson in a hooked performance) . Infected by a deadly designer virus that makes Ebola seem like the flu, Snake has no choice but to remove the job of retrieving. Malloy (Stacy Keach stepping in for the gradual Lee Van Cleef) and Brazen (the blooming Michelle Forbes leisurely of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, “Homicide: Life on the Streets” and the second season of “24″) provide Snake with his only link to the outside world.

Along the intention Snake meets surfers (Peter Fonda), the Surgeon General of Beverly Hills (Bruce Campbell in a hilarious role that truly is the highlight of the movie) in pursuit of the diagram. Oh and once again Snake has one of those colossal digital watches attached to his wrist to remind him his days are numbered if he doesn’t acquire the design befriend in time. Filled with colossal cameos by Steve Buscemi (as Procedure to the Stars Eddie), B-movie queen Pam Grier (as Hershe Las Palmas), Italian beauty Valerie Golino, the behind Paul Bartel, Issac Hayes (in a cameo) and Robert Carradine “Hasten from L.A.” unprejudiced might be Carpenter’s most undervalued film (along with the huge satire “They Live”) .

The weakest link in the film turns out to be the uneven visual effects done by Disney’s Buena Vista Visual Effects. Some of the opticals notice stout particularly the scenes where Los Angeles gets hit by the 9.6 earthquake. The sequences lively the mini-sub and some of the helicopters witness as if they were taken from computer games. While computer graphics were unruffled developing at the time, I’m surprised that Disney’s effects house wasn’t able to advance up with more convincing visuals for this sequence. Mild, while they aren’t what they could be they’re not the focus of the narrative either and are a shapely minor quandary. Many of the best effects work quite well. The production do by Lawrence G. Paull (”Blade Runner”, “Relieve to the Future”, “Predator 2″) gives the film a grand bigger seek than the budget the film had (it cost roughly $50 million to compose including the marketing section of the budget) . A bit of trivia about the film. Russell appears wearing the same costume he had for the first film at the beginning. Russell also made all the basketball shots seen in the climatic game himself.

Presented in its novel widescreen format with a trailer as the only extra, this was released when Paramount was playing rep up in releasing product for the DVD market. The image quality is exceptionally respectable with tall color reproduction and a nearly flawless print (particularly when compared to the remastered re-release of “Speed from Novel York”) with a nice 5.1 sound mix.

It’s too unpleasant this hasn’t been reissued with extras (such as a commentary from Carpenter and Russell and one or two featurettes. Heck, there’s got to be a promo share somewhere in Paramount’s vault about this as I seem to remember one being released to promote it) because, while isn’t quite up to “Elope from Unique York”, “Flee from L.A.” is unexcited a memorable sequel with enough satire, parody and humor laced moments to hold fans of the new joyful. Hopefully one of these days this minor Carpenter classic will earn the re-evaluation it deserves.

When I first saw this film in the theaters, I really didn’t like it. In fact, I was dazzling let down! I had grown up with Speed From Unique York, and to my alarm, John Carpenter remade his fill film! I’m not kidding, REMADE it. True down to Snake getting shot in the leg and limping for the last half of the film. Years later I revaluated my belief. You can’t gain a film as corny as this on accident, especially if you’re a venerable director like John Carpenter; It had to be done on purpose. I’ve read numerous interviews over the years and have found out two things, and I deem these two things are the reason this film ended up the diagram it did. First, John Carpenter hates sequels. He never wanted to construct sequels to his films. He never wanted a sequel to Halloween(let alone six! That’s why he produced Halloween 3 which people hated so great, coz he was trying to remove this series in a different direction and not retread the whole Michael Myers thing) . I also understand that both Carpenter and Kurt Russell were under alot of studio pressure to fabricate this film. I don’t know what kind of favor Carpenter owed the studio, but he made this film. And my theory is that he made this film intentionally unpleasant to say to the studio, “There, I made the stinking sequel you wanted, don’t ask me to do it again!” I mean really, if he had wanted to build a sequel to Elope From Current York, don’t you judge he would have struck while the iron was hot and made it at the height of the first film’s success instead of waiting 15 years? Mediate about it. When I judge this scenario, I can leer Elope From L.A and have a honorable laugh thinking that John Carpenter may have played a large joke on the Hollywood studios. Really, there’s no plot Carpenter included that surfing scene with the method of it being taken seriously. The film is unbiased device too overblown, method too cheesy and obviously a carbon copy of the unique to be anything other than a joke. Kurt may be older now, but he’s actually tranquil able to play Snake Plissken like it’s 1980. The performance is ample, it’s unbiased the film surrounding Kurt that’s comic. Try watching it again and discover what you mediate.

Each night I turned on the HBO feature anxious to glance a righteous dramatic series, and learn about my country’s struggle for life through one its most underrated founding fathers, John Adams.

Paul Giamatti’s performance in the title role is mighty in declare as he, like many other actors, seems to play himself as distinguished as his character. He turns from a loving father to the lawyer and representative who sometimes looks apoplectic rather than fair an mad or fiery patriot. Great to his credit, I felt the John Adams of later years on subsequent episodes was extremely well-acted.

Abigail Adams is played by Laura Linney, and her performance is ample and not the least in instruct. From the first moment, she is thoroughly credible as the vivacious lover, friend, confidante, advisor, and wife of John Adams. Her acting here should garner her an Emmy. The actors protraying Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson turned in stellar performances.

Many complain that this did not follow the book of the same title, and was not accurate to history exactly. To the first expect the respond is what does? To the second, it is a well-written and well-acted drama that deserves our attention.

The series begins with the Boston Massacre and John Adams representing the British soldiers. With his successful defense, he is noticed by the Crown and the colonials who are striving for independence. Adams chooses independence over service to the king and we peek him as representative, foreign minister, beggar and borrower, ambassador, vice president, and president. His one anchor through these assignments and occupations in the struggle of a unusual nation is his fancy and respect for his wife, Abigail whom he always refers to as “my friend.” The letters between the two is one constant that sustains their worship through loneliness of separation, as Mr. Adams is more often away than home.

Particularly touching is the drab existence they piece in an uncompleted White House, the danger John Adams suffers from the loss of his Abigail, his renewed friendship with Thomas Jefferson, and his dying view that his friend survives him, even though Jefferson died three hours earlier. In one of the ironies of our history, both men died exactly fifty years to the day, after July 4, 1776.

This myth ends with both Abigail and John Adams quoting letters of their appreciate for each other and a young nation, as they ascend a hill together and study out over their country. They hope that they will be able to notice future generations of Americans, from heaven, and wonder if they will deserve the sacrifice and freedom they have given them.

So do I.

I read David McCullough’s Vast book in anticipation of this miniseries. McCullough painted a recount of a man and a time that I found fascinating; a relate of a hardworking, sensitive (maybe mildly obsessive-compulsive in terms of his emotional high and lows) genius. I found the first few episodes agreeable, albeit different from the book. It is the last few episodes that have really affected my belief on this series.

The series insists on focusing on Adams’ lows. It seems the writers took all the depressing elements of McCullough’s book, which were few, and magnified those to center stage. For instance, John Adams’ alcoholic son Charles has a major piece in the series, but played a relatively minor role in the book. The mudslinging between Jefferson and Adams in Adams’ second election for president was jettisoned for the Charles Adams storyline. Also, Adams, presented by McCullough, was a genuine natured man with a self-deprecating sense of humor. In the series he seems to live in misery.

They also took scenes that were generally upbeat and made them darker. When Adams meets King George III (in my plan the climax of the sage – or at least the first half of the account) in the book, the King is very polite and safe (noteworthy like his portrayal in The Madness of King George III) . He smiled a lot and made Adams more comfortable, if not less in dismay. In the series the King is impartial listless queer. I can only guess the filmmakers were hinting at King George’s future illness/madness. It’s almost as if this series is based on another book about John Adams – a darker book. This series really missed the tone of McCullough’s spacious book.

Still — divorcing myself from the book — I collect this series is well-made and held my attention. Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney are very favorable. My advice would be to look the series first, then read the book for a great more uplifting anecdote.

Schoolhouse Rock is an novel American cultural phenomenon. Nearly every person who grew up after the unhurried Sixties is familiar with the series. How ubiquitous is it? I would predict that if you started humming “Conjunction Junction,” “I’m Unprejudiced a Bill,” or “Three Is a Magic Number” in a room of a dozen people, three-quarters would know the reference and at least a couple would probably join in humming or singing the words.

This is unimpeachable stuff. To say that this 2-disc dwelling is definitive is to do injustice to the word “definitive.” EVERYTHING you would ever want to know about Schoolhouse Rock is here. All forty-six cartoons ever done for the series are included, even the “Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips” series that looked at computers. The electoral college toon that was done later is section of this collection, too.

The extras on the second disc are outstanding. In addition to Scooter Computer and the rarely seen “The Weather Point To,” you accept a slow the scenes leer at the electoral college song, a Top 20 countdown of the best in the series, a puzzle game that features the songs, four music videos of the songs arranged by contemporary pop/rock groups, a feature on the Emmy Awards won by the series, commentary by the creators, and more.

The navigation perform of the DVD is qualified. Only want to eye the “Multiplication Rock” or “America Rock” toons? You can choose the specific series you want, play all within a series, or grasp each specific toon from a series. You can also determine to play all forty-six toons or honest the ones chosen by fans as the top ones. There’s a built-in walk feature as well. Every DVD should be this easy to navigate and expend.

Even the booklet that comes with this edition is honorable. The lyrics for the top ten toons are included as is the history of Schoolhouse Rock. A chapter breakdown is included at the ruin of the booklet.

Schoolhouse Rock is virtually impervious to review due to its unbiquitous nature within a whole generation or two of Americans. The cleverness of the animation enlivens the topic discussed, not to mention holding the attention of young children. The songs are exceptionally catchy; I’m unexcited amazed at how they managed to do such a mammoth job marrying the Preamble of the Constitution with a hummable melody. Definitely a reflection of the musical styles of the day, songs like “Verb: That’s What’s Happening” (done in the style of the soundtrack of “Shaft”) or “The Preamble” (70s Folk/Rock) catch the era perfectly. It makes those of us who grew up in those days misty-eyed for a return of that AM radio sound to today’s music.

If you have kids (or are fair nostalgic at heart), this DVD is significant. I’m using it as homeschool material for our kids. When my son sings the songs, it’s sizable to know another generation will be pleased the merits of Schoolhouse Rock. No inquire of, this 30th anniversary edition of Schoolhouse Rock is truly expedient of five stars.

After hearing my preschooler memorize and recite pointless nursery rhymes, I decided to assign her brain to better exhaust. Enter “Schoolhouse Rock.” Now, instead of hearing about four-and-twenty blackbirds baked in a pie, I’m hearing “12×8 is the same as 10×8 plus 2×8… 80 plus 16 is 96.” Yes, really. Her grandmother was equally impressed when asked “What’s a conjunction? “

Buy,Download, Or Stream Schoolhouse Rock!! Click Here

Schoolhouse Rock presents Multiplication, Grammar, American History, and Science and Computers in all it’s emmy-winning glory. The music — rock, jazz, bluegrass and country — are masterfully produced and yes, danceable. The cartoons are hip, comic, well-crafted and succor the curriculum well. It’s education with attitude.

Here’s the best part: it is fun! Give your children the remote and let them disclose their favorites over and over again. Before you know it, they’ll have a brain packed pudgy of ample stuff. I can’t issue you how many grammar quizzes I passed by remembering the lyrics “Lolly Lolly Lolly salvage your adverbs here,” “then I unpacked my adjectives,” and “a noun is a person state or thing.” Many of my friends hummed the tune of “the preamble” to the constitution during history exams.

There is only one drawback — some of the songs expend cross English like “ain’t.” There is a jukebox feature on each component which allows you to seize which tracks to play, so you can omit those if you like.

I’d also recommend the CD Box Residence or the individual CDs to reinforce the material, but not in area of the DVD.

Swingers could be a hip movie, a Guys movie, great-sagacious-advice movie, a warm-amusing movie, this-is-what-friendship-is-about movie, or simply one of the most facetious for-a-lark flicks of the 90s. But whatever impress you wish to stick on it, this impartial, low-budget humdinger from Liman is very very “money”!

Top 10 reasons to derive your hands on this movie now:

(1) It’s fast-paced, well edited (not one wasted scene) and frequently laugh-out-loud comic. If you hear people dismiss this as an inconsequential yarn about a “bunch of losers trying to derive laid”, I’m terrorized they honest have not watched the entire movie. I am not into the “Ogle who shagged me” genre of humor, but this movie will truly grow on you.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Swingers! Click Here

(2) It’ll ring a bell with almost anyone, particularly guys. Mike — a crestfallen loverboy (Jon Favreau) is in the throes of a breakup, and his confidence has hit rock bottom. (Sidenote: Favreau is a very ordinary looking guy, which in fact imho is the power of his character.) Under the aegis of his friend Trent (Vince Vaughn, in top obtain, a lot better than his controlled acting in, gulp, The Psycho) Mike re-learns how to pick up assist up on his feet and assume reins of his life/emotions again. While this happens, we are treated to a bunch of every-day faux pas that we all can identify with in a blink. Keen yet?

(3) The boys’ camaraderie is infectious. If you search for this movie with friends — and this indeed is the best draw to ogle it! — you’ll know what I mean. This has to be one of the most fair portrayals of relationships between friends — both the lover and the platonic variety.

(4) Call me outlandish but I loved the sound track, a scrumptious blend of underground jazz and triphop.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Swingers! Click Here

(5) Some of the “catch serve on your feet” dialogue for Mike is truly marvellous, and makes for better, more down-to-earth, more appealing advice about life and relationships than Dr. Ruth and Oprah set aside together.

(6) An spirited gaze at the Los Angeles we never examine in films, the underground life of the struggling actors and writers and less glamorous people, not living in Malibu opulence as seen in other weaker films.

(7) Some broad Sega Genesis NHL ice-hockey “footage” (to utilize a dignified term) and an current preview of seeing Gretzky’s head knocked.

(8) This is to men what “Sex and the City” is to women. (Ok, SATC has had a lot more time than Swingers to entice us with the workings of the Unique Woman, but you obtain the opinion)

(9) A wide assortment of one-liners for you to conveniently plagiarize from. Not seen in a single movie since Roxanne with Steve Martin.

(10) Oh, and it’s so laid abet, its horizontal. No spiffy visual FX, no atomize lisp bang, no cheap frills. But unruffled a high pleasing homerun.

Required Viewing.

I may not be able to describe to it as well as I can to, say, The Truth About Cats and Dogs, but I have never laughed so hard at any movie in my life. And relating isn’t so notable if you can understand and empathize the characters. I saw a diminutive bit of me in Trent (loud, outspoken) and a petite of my friends in Mike and Sue. It helps the average girl understand the not-so-normal thinking of the not-so-average guy that we all demolish up falling for. And besides all that, it’s realistic. Name another ’90’s movie that is more realistic. The record is expansive, the acting perfect, the direction large. Retract this or rent it. No matter what your gender.

Though Scott’s uniquely frenetic editing has been toned down from his previous films, his unmistakable style composed frequents the action and accentuates the tension-filled premise. Denzel Washington’s shiny and moderately contemptible dispatcher plays off of John Travolta’s Wall Street savvy sociopath with plenty of clever exchanges, and the murky humor and suspense that accumulate its intention into the bloodshed culminates in an curious game of cat and mouse. Not quite as slick as the current, and perhaps a diminutive too conspicuous in its efforts at exuding chilly, this latest bewitch on the subway heist tale detached accomplishes entertainment at break-neck hasten.

When a Current York City subway declare is hijacked, Rail Control Center dispatcher Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) becomes an unwitting negotiator for the ruthless criminals aboard. Led by the uncontainable Ryder (John Travolta), the hijackers inquire ten million dollars in exchange for the seventeen hostages and offer only one hour to sing the ransom. As minutes quick count down, Garber must expend his cunning and resourcefulness to capture time and net the mercenary off guard as the spot goes from awful to catastrophic.

The modern, highly stylized, frenzied editing is assuredly a now permanent technique for Tony Scott films – it’s a signature blueprint that he ceaselessly experiments with, frequently going overboard, and only occasionally able to harness. In Pelham it looks familiar but doesn’t detract from the memoir, even if some moments of suspense are dulled by the blurred colors of slow-motion and missing frames. The remaining stunt sequences are entertaining and tense, but hardly principal. The car chases are never about catching someone, but rather beating the clock. It’s action for action’s sake, and while enjoyably destructive, it’s entirely apparent.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3! Click Here

Most audiences will not know that The Taking of Pelham 123 is based on a John Godey unique, or that it’s been adapted into a movie twice before with the same name. While Scott’s version stands on its hold as a big-budget action movie, the purpose of specifically remaking this legend is puzzling. Shouldn’t the reasoning tedious the revisiting of a accepted spot be to improve upon some outstanding aspect? The employ of the internet, cell phones, snipers, bloodshed, low language and more give this fresh vision a sparklingly modernized feel, but when the movie draws to a discontinuance, it honest can’t compete with the 1974 version. Washington and Travolta have an challenging chemistry, but even that can’t outdo the cat-and-mouse mindgames between Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw, who played their counterparts in the first feature adaptation. Perhaps a title change could have appropriately distanced Scott’s lift from being endlessly compared to an infinitely agreeable film.

- The Massie Twins

I’m a ample fan of the unusual version of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. It was a snapshot in time of Unique York City in the seventies; a cynical, bloated, bureaucratic mess that was entirely unprepared for a terrorist attack. In fact, there were actually concerns that the movie would inspire right terrorists to purchase a subway bellow hostage. The current featured everything from undercover cops to hippies, a crisp military professional turned terrorist to the random accidents of people in stressful situations. It even invented the “color codenames” later broken-down in Reservoir Dogs.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 is catnip to movie directors in the same plan that single stage sets are to theatrical directors – be it a subway or a stage with honest two chairs, this is a film about two men facing off in a battle of wits. The majority of the movie takes spot over an intercom between a terrorist and a dispatcher, with occasional cuts to the havoc their conversation causes throughout Unusual York City. And if the terrorist represents the international Other that is a threat to our national security, the dispatcher represents the everyman of Modern York, our hardworking servicemen and women who lost their lives on September 11. With material like that, it’s no wonder the film has been remade twice.

Director Tony Scott updates the film to new day sensibilities. The villain, Ryder (John Travolta in corpulent crazy mode), isn’t a mercenary applying crisp military precision to the art of extortion; he’s a (SPOILER ALERT) worn Wall Street tycoon – slightly lower on the villain totem pole than industrialists who pollute the environment. The undercover cop moves into action immediately rather than later in the film, because of course Original York’s finest would answer expeditiously to a terrorist attack. And the dispatcher, Walter Garber (Denzel Washington, looking appropriately puffy and slouched) has a more complicated past and a bigger role.

Unfortunately, the film suffers as a result. In the new, military precision was entirely the point. The trains never ran on time, so tantalizing Modern York to meet a deadline was both a delightful irony and a sticking point with a traditional military officer who expects nothing less than perfection from his men and from the negotiators. Here, that point is muddled by a sort of “we’re all into this together” blue collar ethic that Ryder projects into Garber. Their dialogue unexcited crackles, but this simple change dilutes the force of the film.

The four-man team of poor guys is reduced to two speaking parts, with the other two generic thugs. The emphasis is clearly on Travolta and Washington, and it’s refreshing to have a movie that’s not horrified to exercise some time letting actors unprejudiced act. There’s a lot of talking in this film and that’s not a unpleasant thing.

The movie struggles with the new updates. A live wireless webcam feed gets broadcast to the Internet without government interference (yeah, apt) . Even though the laptop’s battery dies, it’s mysteriously wait on on a moment later. And the two teens on either side of the webcam approach off as self-absorbed morons.

Because this is a vast budget action film, the mild subtlety of the modern version is glossed over in favor of an MTA agent handling a hostage negotiation, wielding a gun, and ultimately inviting in a showdown with the dreadful guy. Since Ryder has no principles to reveal of, the conclusion is particularly unsatisfying.

Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 is a serviceable action film but not a particularly helpful update of the recent. The seventies version was more of a drama with an ensemble cast that was comfortable playing second fiddle to the biggest character of all: Current York City.

I only discovered this movie about four years ago but have watched it every Christmas since. To me it’s the best version of the Christmas Carol ever made, and now it gets the best treatment you could have ever hoped for. This two disc collector’s edition contains two different versions of this movie. First is the colorized version, but then the second is the true treat. They went help to the unusual prints of this and worked from there. After carefully removing the skips, scratches, and jerky frames, they digitally restored the movie to a version that looks as if it were made yesterday! The sound has been changed to 5.1 digital surround, and there’s even a widescreen version for 16:9 televisions.

Highly recommended as the best version of this classic you’ll secure anywhere.

Although this 1951 classic film takes some liberties with the Dicken’s unique, it remains the film most faithful to the unusual record. Some of the sets and costumes were directly inspired by the memorable illustrations in the first edition of the book. Alastair Sim is very convincing as the miserly Scrooge who, after a unpleasant night of ghostly visits, is transformed into a man who knows how to hold Christmas in his heart.

There have been many DVD editions of this holiday popular in unusual years, several of them from VCI Entertainment. In this package, VCI has included some things featured on previous releases (commentary, Dickens biography, etc.), but the true star of this site is the beautifully restored version of the dismal and white film. According to a short feature on the restoration of the film, VCI has finally been able to score film elements from the novel master. Apparently they didn’t have access to a complete master, so they primitive several of the best prints they could procure and digitally read them to resolve which frames were the best available. The rest was cleaned up by hand. It sounds like a labor of treasure, and the result is visible on the conceal. The restored print is available in 4×3 and 16×9 in 1:37:1 format. (According to the Amazon product description page, the aspect ratio is given as 1:87 and elsewhere as 1:33, the DVD box says 1:37.) There are a few seconds of less than pristine audio, but overall this is a lovely worry.

A nice touch I’ve never seen on a DVD before is an optional audio track for the blind, in which a narrator describes the action on the hide pausing for dialog from the actors. A wandering commentary track with Marcus Heard and George Cole (young Scrooge) is included. Considerable of the commentary is reprised in a feature interview by Heard in which Cole reminisces about Alastair Sim, “Spirit of Christmas Past.” The audio is in English only. Subtitles are in English or Spanish.

The second disc offers the recent 1935 Seymour Hicks’ film version of the sage. A colorized version of the 1951 film is also included on Disc 2; the brief introduction by Patrick McNee (young Marley) has been seen before on previous releases of the colorized version. There are also theatrical trailers from the UK release (”Scrooge”) and the US release (”A Christmas Carol”) .

VCI has given us a shapely package here. They’ve done a titanic job with the restoration of a film love. Many viewers will never have seen such a salubrious print of this holiday approved before. The bonus features are a nice inclusion, but the restoration is the genuine reason to win this edition. Highly recommended!

My son was diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified when he was 3. PDD-NOS is on the Autism spectrum, and children with this diagnosis often have developmental delays.

My son had a speech delay and other developmental delays. His speech is grand now…no one can detect that he has this diagnosis. However, the delays have, understandably, affected his learning in some areas.

While his spatial skills have been draw above average–as has his remove of science (such as planets and their attributes) –he has resisted reading. He gets tired and frustrated.

Well, trying many approaches for helping him, I understanding I’d retract a chance and bag the Talking Words Factory from Amazon.com, especially since the reviews were so estimable.

I am very, very overjoyed with this DVD! My son watches it quite often, and he’s now reading books on his occupy. I can search for a marked dissimilarity in a matter of WEEKS. Before, he had to believe about how some of the letters sounded. Now, he rattles them off like a pro–as well as 3-letter words!

This DVD also teaches about vowels and consonants, so he’s learning how the vowels are sticky like glue, holding words together (thanks to Professor Quigley’s Sticky-Ick-O-Rama machine!) . The Word Whammer machine shows children how to assign the consonants and vowels together, and how they sound. I like the fact that they’ll switch around the vowels with the same beginning and ending consonants, to highlight how a vowel sounds within a word.

Talking Words Factory also teaches rhyming, which is a bonus.

Highly recommended!

I have never felt strong enough to actually buy the time to write a review. I am a certified k-6 teacher who has told everyone I know about Leap Frog’s 4 extraordinary movie and now I am telling you…

LF Letter Factory: This was the first (out of 4) Leap Frog Movie that my children watched. My 3 1/2 year archaic and 2 years 2 month passe boys are allowed to stare 1 movie a day. Each Day they agreed, in excitement, to watched this movie. Under a week my 3 1/2 year broken-down knew his letter sounds. He could instruct the letter sound song almost as rapidly as he could divulge the alphabet. After a week, he amazed us when he sat down on the ground and wrote out the entire alphabet like a 4th grader. Had NO belief he could write like this! Shortly thereafter, the 2 year outmoded knew all his letter sounds and letter recognition.

Talking Words Factory: I was so impressed that I bought them the Talking Words Factory that 2nd week. I wasn’t surprised that my 3 1/2 year extinct began to spell, writing, and sounding out 3 letter words. He told me all about how the vowels were all sticky and their job was to stick letters together to invent words. He went around singing the vowel song.

My kids loved the videos so remarkable that for 10 months…My son’s (who veteran to play with Thomas the Trains and puppies) were obsessed with letters and words. They made their believe letter and word factory machines out of their toys and tubs, drew each letter cartoon character, and sang the letter and vowel songs, and the older one wrote, yes wrote, many of his believe homemade books.

Talking Word Factory 2: It doesn’t finish there…They got the Talking Word Factory 2 and Math Circus when they came out this Christmas. In a couple of days, the now 4 year ancient, was telling me all about sh, ch, th, and other blends. He told me how the calm e at the destroy of the word made the other vowel say its name (long vowel sound) . He went on to sigh me also how “when 2 vowels go walking the first one does the talking.” And he wrote and read fresh complex words such as, boat, home, dime, wait, etc. This really increased his ability to read many, many novel words – 8 letter words too!

Math Circus: They loved it too! Though it is snappy sharp for beginners, it is interesting and has an easy belief. Adding and subtracting now comes beautiful easy for my 4 year conventional. I gave him a math work sheet for addition and subtraction unbiased for kicks. Wouldn’t you know it, he did all of them with no dilemma. He was so keen in adding that he started asking about problems such as 3 + 3 + 3. Which helped him learn the thought of multiplication 3 x 3, 3 x 4, etc. But, we told him that he had plenty of time to learn that later!

The only negative comments that I have to say about these Leap Frog videos: Nothing, Oh, except that I wish my children weren’t so obsessed with letters! They eat, breath, and sleep letters. Sometimes I fair wish they would play with the trains, cars, and other toys. They will have their entire school life to learn about letters and reading! I fair hope that when the time comes for school that they won’t have grown board of it!

Other Leap Frog learning tools that reinforce what they learned on the videos:

LF Fridge Phonics Magnets – Fancy it. It sings each letters song when you assign the letter in the hole.

LF Word Whammer Fridge Phonics Site – LF honest came out with this. I know that they will worship. I bought it for the next birthday! It is like the Fridge Phonics, but you can spell 3 letter words.

LF Letter Factory Board Game – Admire it too! It is interactive and the board game talks and sings!

LF Advise Along Letters Flash Cards & CD – Songs from the DVDs. Not that you don’t hear the songs sang enough from your children!

Wish they would manufacture computer CD’s too!

LF Leap Pad – Fun but they got board with the same books over & over. $14 a book!

There are many others, but I had to map the line somewhere!

If you check all the other reviews, I am not alone. Only two out of 121 people gave this movie less than 5 stars! It is about time someone made a movie that parents and children both agree on! Thank you Leap Frog!

What’s this? A recent “Nightmare Before Christmas” DVD package? Actually there are three versions: this two-disc place that includes a downloadable digital copy, a Blu-ray version, and a collector’s edition that comes with a bust of Jack Skellington with a detachable Sandy Claus beard and hat.

Though this version is billed as a two-disc dwelling, it actually has three discs. The third one contains the digital copy. An instruction sheet spells out in sure steps how to download the file to an iPod or similar plan.

The movie itself is a feast for the eyes, ears and imagination. A savory witches’ brew of stop-motion animation, catchy point to tunes and a seriously warped creative license, it always stays legal to its timeless message: to be glad, be yourself. Devilishly nonconformist, it’s an enduring holiday musical for the whole Addams family.

Well, almost. Though all of its awe gags are played entirely for laughs, some of the imagery is downright creepy, especially for microscopic children. Anyone older than say, 6, however, should be pleased every little. Teenagers will care for it.

The narrative — the citizens of Halloweentown attempt to annex neighboring Christmastown — comes from the macabre mind of producer Tim Burton, who wrote it in his spare time (as a poem!) while working as a Disney animator in the 1980s. The movie blends the tastiest bits of Burton’s earlier Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands with a sprinkling of the stop-motion magic first found in Disney’s 1961 Babes in Toyland.

The imaginative cast of characters includes:

* Pumpkin King Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), a sportive misfit who believes his purpose in life is to merge the holidays of Halloween and Christmas.

* Jack’s faithful dog Zero, a ghost with a pretty, jack-o’-lantern nose who, like the hound in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, eventually pulls a sleigh

* Rag-doll heroine Sally (voiced by Catherine O’Hara), Jack’s appreciate interest, who sews herself befriend together when she loses a body part

* Oogie Boogie (Broadway mature Ken Page), a slimy, singing bag of bugs who channels the cartoon version of Cab Calloway in the faded Betty Boop cartoons

* Lock (Paul “Pee-Wee Herman” Reubens), Shock (O’Hara) and Barrel (Danny Elfman, the film’s composer), a trio of wrong trick-or-treaters who “kidnap the Sandy Claws”

* Wheelchair-bound rotten scientist Dr. Finklestein (William Hickey), a duckbilled quack whose flip-top head lets him scratch his brains for inspiration

* A mayor (Glenn Shadix, the interior director Otho in Beetlejuice) who is literally two-faced.

Blessed with the ability to bring adult minds befriend to child’s level, Burton dwells in murky mischief. In fact, some of Nightmare’s best scenes include the kidnapping of Santa Claus and Jack’s hilarious attempt to replace him on Christmas Eve, when the skeleton gleefully delivers presents such as tree-devouring snakes and severed, shrunken heads.

Director Henry Selick painstakingly created the film over three years. Though he had a production crew of over 100, each itsy-bitsy of footage took a week, as each second required 24 ever-so-slightly different shots.

BONUS FEATURES

This 2-disc DVD package has a nice collection of extras:

* An audio commentary with Burton, Selick and Elfman.

* A downloadable digital copy of the film, which you can transfer to an iPod or similar intention.

* Burton’s first short, 1982’s 6-minute “Vincent,” a black-and-white stop-action film about a boy who dreams of being Vincent Ticket, who narrates.

* Burton’s 1994 Disney live-action short “Frankenweenie.” This 30-minute black-and-white film re-imagines the Frankenstein account as the sage of a young boy and his car-struck pet dog in suburban America. A recently taped introduction by Burton shows some working sketches being broken-down for his full-length version now in development.

* A reading of Burton’s current “Nightmare Before Christmas” poem by actor Christopher Lee

* A promotional film for the annual “Nightmare” makeover of Disneyland’s Shocked Mansion.

* Promotional and making-of featurettes, a storyboard to film comparison, deleted scenes and theatrical trailers and posters

If you believe the best movies are the ones that expose you a world you’ve never envisioned before, then you will Care For Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. A benchmark in stop-motion animation, this incredibly difficult-to-make film (24 individually posed frames were needed to get ONE SECONDS’s worth of action) is a masterpiece of art direction, state build, and noble ragged storytelling. The state revolves around Jack, the Pumpkin King of Halloween, and his attempt to hasten Christmas in state of Santa Claus. “Sleigh” becomes confused with “end”; “stockings” become “stalkings”; and spirits go from joyous to ghostly as the two holidays clash together like oil and water, or fire and ice. One of the expansive surprises of the movie is that although it dances around material that could easily careen into cynicism, it remains refreshingly sweet and light throughout. Which is not to say that some of the comedy isn’t a small dim and perhaps geared more towards older children and adults; for example, the brief scene in which a python puppet is shown swallowing a Christmas tree whole is hysterically laughable, but not especially appropriate for the very young.

The special edition DVD is unquestionably the version of this classic to choose. Included are a wealth of extras: the teaser and theatrical trailers; a documentary on “The Making of …”; deleted scenes and storyboards, etc, etc. The best bonuses are two short films by Burton: “Vincent”, a poetic tribute to the glowing Vincent Designate, narrated by the subject himself; and “Frankenweenie”, a canine send-up of “Frankenstein”, starring Shelley Duvall, Daniel Stern, and a cast of talented character actors. This DVD is one that you can exercise HOURS exploring happily! Highly recommended as both a Halloween and Christmas treat.
